Building a Software Support Tool
to support Doctors, Fellows, Residents, and
Nurse Practitioners
Harvard Medicine, established in 1782, has
over 9,000 faculty and 18 teaching hospitals
and research institutions. One of these institutions,
Children's Hospital Boston, has been rated
one of the nation's top pediatric hospital
for fifteen years in a row according to US
News and World Report. Children's Hospital
Boston is the primary teaching hospital of
Harvard Medical School and most physicians
hold faculty appointments. Children's records
18,000 inpatient admissions each year in addition
to over 150 outpatient programs and emergency
services which provide care to approx. 300,000
annually.

The
Need
Children's Hospital Boston (CHB) partnered
with Brookwood to build an eLearning program
to train Doctors, Fellows, Residents and Nurse
Practitioners with their custom ECD (Electronic
Clinical Documentation) application. ECD is
a program that allows employees to create,
edit and sign clinical documents. Brookwood
provided CHB with instructional design support
to "chunk" the program into small learning
segments that included rich media for higher
retention rates. Employees with access to the
system could access a Main Menu and get the
information they needed in 1 click, then return
to the program to apply those skills in the
software application. The course would also
book-mark the lessons, so employees could visually
see what lessons were completed when they returned
to the training program. This served as a training
and support tool for CHB. Because lessons were
so short, users could view them in seconds
to get the small snippet of information instantly
and return to the working application. The
small lessons also increased performance over
the CHB Intranet so there were no delays in
streaming animation and narration to the end-user.
The Key Advantages
- Hosting content for CHB so
project managers in Boston could access 24/7
- Optimization and compression
for streaming rich-media to analog modems
- Rapid prototyping > animated
lessons could be approved daily
- Delivery for Web, LAN and
CD-ROM
